How to get to and around Manali
Manali is about 600 km (370 mi) by mountain road from Delhi and lies along the Beas River in the Kullu Valley at an altitude of 6,725 feet (2,050 metres).
The nearest airport to Manali is Bhuntar in Kullu, but flights are infrequent. With no rail service, getting to Manali usually involves a long, winding bus ride through high-altitude mountain passes. The fact that Manali is difficult to reach contributes to its charm.

Bus from Delhi: You can take the 14-hour Volvo night bus from Delhi to Manali. The night bus usually departs around 5 pm and arrives late the next morning.
The buses do not have toilets on board, however, they do stop frequently. Plan for a very bumpy, winding ride! Be careful if you get carsick easily. For better mountain views, sit on the right side of the bus. If you are afraid of seeing the road go downhill on some of the curves, sit on the left!

Bus from Dharamsala to Manali: Volvo tourist buses from Mcleod Ganj and Dharamsala depart nightly at 8:30 pm; the journey takes about nine hours.
Manali India tourist buses and minibuses usually arrive at the private bus stand about 200 metres south of Manali. Public buses arrive at the bus stand in the centre of town. You can easily walk north on the main road (Mall Road) into town or catch one of the waiting auto rickshaws into town.

The wide, crowded street through central Manali is known as "The Mall". Although there are a few shabby hotels along the main road and on the side streets, most visitors prefer to stay just outside town in Old Manali or across the river at Vashisht.

Old Manali: Many travelers escape the hustle and bustle of Central Manali by trekking north up the foot-scorching hills to peaceful Old Manali. The single strip of land through Old Manali is dotted with a variety of budget and mid-range accommodation options. Tourist-oriented restaurants serve Indian, Tibetan and many Western favorites; you'll even find Mexican and sushi on some menus!
Old Manali is a great way to escape the busy shopping areas while still within the city limits. Walk north on Mall Road then continue north on Circuit House Road to the steel bridge. Cross the river and turn left; plenty of signs will point you where to go.

Vashisht: A little less accessible to tourists but definitely budget-friendly, Vashisht is located along the hills across the Beas River and the highway opposite old Manali.
To get to Vashisht, you will have to cross a bridge just north of Central Manali and then walk north along the busy Naggar Highway. You can turn right and continue walking along Vashisht Road or take a small, steep trail through a hillside community to Vashisht. The atmosphere in Vashisht is laid-back but in a different way than old Manali. Many budget backpackers come to Vashisht for the cheap accommodation and great views from balconies and rooftops.

When to visit Manali
The weather in Manali varies greatly throughout the year. Even in October, you will find yourself hot during the sunny days and then suddenly cold at night when the temperature drops sharply. Summers can bring temperatures of around 27 degrees Celsius, but temperatures can drop below freezing from October to April. Most guest houses do not have central heating, but sometimes personal heaters can be rented for an extra fee.
