Things to do when traveling to Johanna Beach

Camp

Johanna Beach Campsite is a haven on the Great Ocean Road. The campsite is located in the Great Otways National Park on the infamous Shipwreck Coast, surrounded by eucalyptus forests with some ancient rainforest nearby. Ignoring the surroundings, the campsite is well maintained and has perfect, comfortable grass with bushes protecting the campsite from the strong sea winds that blow into Johanna.

Just a short walk from the campsite is a large 3.6km stretch of golden sand beach with average waves over 1.5 metres high and the Johanna River estuary located right in the centre of the beach.

Johanna Beach is just over half way from the Great Ocean Road and less than an hour from Port Campbell National Park and the 12 Apostles. It’s the perfect place to camp along the Great Ocean Road and if possible, stay a few nights as there are plenty of places to explore in every direction.

Campsite amenities

This campsite is great and attracts a lot of people, not only to stay overnight but also to visit Johanna during the day. Although it is often quite crowded and bustling when the weather is nice, remember that you are still quite far away, so there are not many modern amenities.

Johanna Beach is very well maintained. This is a bush campground. No grilling or fires allowed as this campground prohibits it. There are 25 spacious campsites on comfortable, thick, well-maintained grass with minimal privacy.

Dog friendly campgrounds and beaches

There aren't many campsites or beaches along the Great Ocean Road where you can bring your dog, while Johanna Beach and the campground are dog friendly.

You will need to keep your dog on a leash but they will still enjoy walking along the large beach and trails near the campsite. There are a number of other places throughout the Otways that also allow dogs to be walked.

Swimming and surfing

Johanna Beach is on the world surfing map. Surfers from all over the world can almost always be found here when the waves are up and the beach even hosted the 1970 World Surfing Championships.

It is said that when there are no surf breaks at Torquay and along the start of the Great Ocean Road, the waves crash onto the south-west facing beach. The average wave height is over 1.5 metres and they often hit a series of different sandbanks and small reefs along the vast beach that stretches over three and a half kilometres. Some sandbanks produce 3 metre left and right banks and 3 metre waves can be found along the edges of many of the breaks along the beach. The most famous and popular left bank is at the eastern end of the beach known as Rotten Point. Slippery Point is at the western end of the beach.

The Johanna River flows into the centre of Johanna Beach and rip currents can be found approximately every 350 metres along the beach. Johanna Beach is a great spot for experienced surfers, with the surf right next to the campsite. There are some moderate areas where you can swim but due to rip currents and medium sized waves, it is probably best to head to Port Campbell if you are looking for a safe beach to swim.
