Places to visit when coming to Port Stephens
Mount Tomaree
Mount Tomaree offers some of the most spectacular views along the entire East Coast of Australia. Mount Tomaree rises dramatically out of the ocean, separating Shoal Bay from the open waters of the Tasman Sea and forming the natural entrance to Port Stephens .
If you only do one thing in Stephens, it’s to climb Mt Tomaree. If you can climb stairs, you can hike the 2km back uphill. It’s not easy at times, but the views are worth it.
To the south you’ll find Shark Island and Fingal Bay and to the north, across Port Stephens to Jimmys Beach and even along the coast towards Seal Rocks. Keep an eye out for dolphins in the water and from May to October you might spot a whale or two on their migration.
Worimi National Park/Region – Stockton Sand Dunes
Worimi National Park is home to the largest moving sand dunes in the entire Southern Hemisphere (known as the Stockton Sand Dunes) and this is another must-see on your trip to Port Stephens . The dunes stretch for around 20 miles and make for some pretty epic scenery.
You can drive through the dunes yourself if you have a 4WD but you will need a permit, details are available on the official NSW National Parks website.
Dolphin Cruise Tour
Between 90 and 120 bottlenose dolphins regularly call Port Stephens home, which means you’re guaranteed to see them on one of the boats that cruise the bay. Imagine Cruises offers a free return cruise if you don’t see any dolphins. The Imagine Cruises 1.5-hour Dolphin Watching & Paddleboarding Tour is just $38 per adult, and offers the incredible experience of gliding across the water with a net (on the side of the boat but underwater!)
They also currently offer the only licensed wild dolphin swim in New South Wales for $349 per person, which includes video footage of you underwater with the wild dolphins. Amazing!
Koala Spotted at Tilligerry Habitat
One of the best chances of spotting koalas in the wild along the entire East Coast of Australia is right here in Port Stephens. The habitat itself is a 9 hectare nature reserve along Tanilba Bay and has a 2km boardwalk through the beautiful eucalypts and back along the coast.
Spotting koalas in the wild is actually harder than you might think but the team of volunteers at the centre will help to provide information about recent sightings. The centre is open from 9am to 3pm but you can enter the walk at any time, note that koalas are more active at dawn and dusk!
Port Stephens is not only attractive for its natural beauty but also for its diversity and richness in experiential activities. This is truly an ideal tourist destination for those who want to escape the noise of the city and enjoy the beautiful natural space of Australia.
